Abbotsford All-City Teams Announced
Abbotsford All-City 2008
Abbotsford school rugby teams had a successful year in 2008. This was especially true at the junior level, where Abbotsford teams finished in the top three spots in the Fraser Valley. Hundreds of boys and girls were active from grades 7-12 in Abbotsford school rugby programs, as teams continue to expand and develop their rugby skills.
At the senior high school level, there were 5 boys’ teams competing, with Rick Hansen, Robert Bateman, and Yale all qualifying...
for provincials. Mouat continued to develop its program, having just restarted in recent years after being inactive for over a decade, and Abby competed in tier 2 as coaches continue to build its program. In the Provincial AA division, Robert Bateman finished 2nd and Rick Hansen, having moved to AA due to decreased school enrollment, finished 8th. Yale finished 16 in the AAA division. Earlier in the year, Kurtis Appeldoorn, Jon Martin, and Vuk Djordjevic were all awarded the honor of being selected to the Canada U-17 program coached by Dave Chambers from Robert Bateman.
At the senior girls level, 4 teams competed from Abbotsford, including Abbotsford Collegiate, Rick Hansen, Robert Bateman and for the first time ever, Yale Secondary. Robert Bateman won the Fraser Valleys and finished 3rd in the AA division at the Provincials. Abby Collegiate came 9th in BC in the AAA division while Rick Hansen finished 11th in AA. Yale competed in an exhibition league, having a team comprised primarily of grade 9 and 10 players. For individual honours, Kendra Reeves and Stephanie Thiessen of Bateman each earned the privilege of representing Canada at the U-19 level over the past year. Kendra traveled on two tours and was impressively named captain of the Canada U-19 team.
Abbotsford teams experienced much success at the junior level with 5 competitive teams in action, including Rick Hansen, Mouat, Bateman, Yale and Abby. All schools had very competitive teams with Yale running two teams. Hansen, Mouat and Yale all had close battles throughout the season. Yale edged out Hansen in the Fraser Valley final with a last minute try to win the championship for the first time in 26 years while Mouat defeated Earl Marriot to earn third in the Valley.
In Grade 8 action, Abbotsford schools were again very strong this year. In the boys’ division, six Abbotsford teams competed in the local league, including W. A. Fraser, Clayburn, Chief Dan, Howe, Abby, and Reimer. W.A. Fraser beat Clayburn in a close match to win the Upper Fraser Valley championship, but lost in overtime to Earl Marriott of White Rock in the Fraser Valley final to earn 2nd overall.
The Abbotsford Grade 8 girls’ league saw six teams competing for the city championship, including Howe, W.A. Fraser, Chief Dan, Abby, Reimer and Clayburn. Abby Middle beat Fraser 5-0 in the final to win the league.
In conjunction with coaches, the Abbotsford Rugby Club has selected a senior boys All-Star team that played an Irish touring side on June 14 where they fought hard, but lost to the more experienced visitors. It has also selected an All-City team for each playing level, comprised of five players from each school who showed outstanding commitment and skill throughout the season. Heritage Park from Mission is included in this group as many of its players are involved with the Abbotsford Rugby Club.
The Abbotsford Rugby Club is very proud of the Abbotsford school athletes, teams and coaches, and would like to applaud them for their successes both on and off the field. Congratulations to all successful 2008 recipients.
