Women’s Div.1 first half season recap

The Abbotsford Rugby Club's Women's team is off to a great start this season. They have an undefeated season going so far this year with a 7-0 record. They started off the season with a hard-fought victory against Meralomas Club. The game went back and forth and on the last play of the game center Natalie Teteris crashed through the back line and scored under the posts to win the game.

The following four games were very one sided games with Abbotsford scoring 244 points and only allowing 68 points against. Abby then hosted Comox RFC, who were currently sitting in second place. The Abbotsford Women faced some adversity as they were missing a few girls due to injury but they battled through winning 51-42. In their last game of the half they traveled to Cowichan and won 92-7.

The girls have a mix of youth with graduated local high school stars Shalaya Valenzuela, Alex Motoc, and Ashlyn Smith. There are also veterans Jerusha Dunsmore, who has played in over 300 games for the ARFC, Stephanie Wiebe and Elyssa Phillipson. Hard running forwards Lauren Arthur and Megan Chambers have been an impact players in every game they have played.

Division 2

The ARFC men were on the road to face the Vancouver Rowing Club. Due to a scheduling quirk this is now the second time the Abby Div. 2 squad have taken on the VRC Div. 2 in the first half of the season. The Rowers won the first game and Abby looked like they would give the Rowers a good game through forty minutes with the score being 19-10 at the break. Abbotsford conceded two easy tries to Rowers before they shook off the rust and came back with a nice solo effort from recruit, Alex Patterson. Alex had several snipes around the ruck and was a constant threat with ball in hand. After Abbotsford got on the board they then went to work on a long-range team try. This one saw the forwards and back combining with an initial break from ageless wonder, Dan Tou. He in turn found lots of support through backs Alex Iskender, Austin Mcrae, and finally touching down was Sol Puckey. Rowers responded with a try of their own before the break and led by 9 at the half.

The second half was all one-way traffic for the Rowers. Abbotsford couldn’t match the fitness and skill of the Rowers as they brought on plenty of fresh legs to eventually run away with the game in the end. Thanks to the referee and to the Rowers for the great hosting as always at their great clubhouse!

Division 1

Another bizarre schedule saw the Div. 1 men play Rowers for a 3rd time in the first half of the season. Abbotsford were fortunate enough to host Rowers twice and came away with two wins on those occasions. Rowers were looking to get on the board with a win and they played a strong game throughout the match. Putting Abbotsford under pressure through a combination of strong forward and back play.

The match started well for Abbotsford with a break from fly-half, Noah Jensen. He cut through the Rowers defense and off-loaded to Darwin Guevara for the early try. The conversion from Peyton Gibson was good and Abbotsford were up early. Rowers responded with a couple penalties, but Abbotsford scored again, this time through eight-man, Corey Sherameto, who found a gap around the ruck and showed some deft footwork to freeze the Rowers fullback and scored under the posts. Abbotsford were up 14-6.

Just before the break, Rowers replied with a 7 pointer to get to within 1 before halftime. The exciting first half spilled over to the second half with Abbotsford pressing hard to get another try but were stymied by the tough Rowers defence time and time again. Rowers turned defence to offence as they stormed down field to score a try of their own and take the lead 18-14. With 10 minutes remaining, Abbotsford threw everything they had at Rowers and after a prolonged period camped in the Rowers 22, Abbotsford finally got over the line through prop, Brent Bradbury. Gibson landed a tricky conversion to put the score at 21-18. The see-saw battle took another turn as Rowers, with 5 minutes remaining put together multiple phases and scored a nice try in the corner to take the lead 23-21. The kickoff was secured by Abbotsford who made a nice break to get the ball over half way but were penalized at the breakdown. Rowers kicked the ball off and the final whistle went.

Overall, an exciting game filled with lots of attacking ambition by both sides. Thanks to Rowers for the great hosting, to the referee and best of luck to DJ who heads to the USA.

This week Abbotsford host Langley in Div 1/2 and have a big MOvember fundraiser at the club to follow. Help donate to a great cause through the link below!
