ARFC September 23 Report

Div 1 Women:

The Abbotsford women played SFU in the opening match of a full ARFC club day this Saturday at Exhibition Park. Abbotsford's roster saw a wealth of young faces and a full bench of substitutes, which proved valuable for the physical match up. The back-and-forth first half had Abbotsford riddled with penalties, sending them backwards, and allowing SFU over the line 4 times.
Abbotsford's forwards rallied against a tough Simon Fraser pack and turned things around in the second half. The fiery Abbotsford backline sliced through SFU, scoring try after try to seal the game in the last 30 minutes. Outside centre Natalie Teteris delivered a powerful 5 tries in her 80 minutes, while Captain Chelsea Fowler touched down 4 and rookie Vivianna Johnson lit up the right wing with a hat trick in her 40 minutes. The final score favoured Abbotsford 78-29. Next weekend the ladies travel to Nanaimo to face the Hornets.

Tries:
Chelsea Fowler - 4
Natalie Teteris - 5
Vivianna Johnson - 3

Converts:
Chelsea Fowler - 9

Div 1 Men:

The ARFC men played host to the visiting Division 1 champions, Surrey Beavers. The ARFC are rebuilding and a mixed side of rookies and veterans took to the field. The lack of cohesion showed in the first half with Surrey coming out strong and opening the scoring with their # 12 slicing through for a try. Abbotsford men worked their way back down the field to get a penalty through the boot of Sol Puckey to put the scores at 7-3. Surrey then went on a tear and scored 3 long range tries before Abbotsford got on the board with Noah Jensen dotting down after some excellent interplay and off-loading by the backs. At the break, the score was Surrey on top 24-8.
After the break, ARFC showed some heart and came back scoring tries through Jensen again and Darwin Guevara before Surrey responded with an intercept try of their own. Abbotsford again showed no quit and scored another multi-phase try, combining backs and forwards to touch down through big man, Ryan March. This put Abbotsford down 29-34 with 5 to go. However, Surrey showed why they are the reigning champs and scored off a set scrum through their backs to end the Abbotsford come back. The final score was 41-29. Kudos to Surrey for their win and showing their support at the ARFC clubhouse. Abbotsford was delighted with the second half comeback and look forward to building on that momentum as they host the Rowers next week at home. Thanks to the referee in charge and to the post-match chef, Jake Buskell.

Final Score: Surrey 41 Abbotsford 29
Tries: Jensen (2) Guevera (1) March (1)
Converts: (P.Gibson 3)
Penalties: Puckey (1)

Div 2 Men:

Abbotsford regretfully had to forfeit the match due to a severe shortage of front-row forwards. Hopefully, this will be the only time that happens. Thanks to Burnaby for still coming out to play.
