On Tuesday, June 5, the ARFC Men's team hosted St. Andrews University squad from Scotland. St. Andrews was a formidable team who play in a Scottish University League where they currently sit in 4th place out of 5 with 2 wins and 6 losses so this was to be a good test for the Abby Men's squad. Abby fielded a mixture of Premier, 1sts, 3rds and a junior player which is common when hosting touring squads (two Surrey players dressed up for the tilt as well).
Abby started the game well with Graeme MacRury finishing off a nice string of backline play led by Konrad Rybkowski and Kurtis Appeldoorn. The forward pack, led by the hard running of Aaron Flagg produced some great ball for the backs and Abby went into the half holding a 20 to 7 lead.
Abby made some subs in the second half allowing some youth into the game and unfortunately gave up two tries in the closing 5 minutes to lose to the Scottish team 28 to 27; although outscoring the visitors 5 to 4 in tries, it was the kicking game that cost Abby the game. Dave Hull officiated the game and thanks goes out to him for a job well done.
The Scottish boys came back to the clubhouse for a feed and Man of the Match presentations, where Kurtis Appeldoorn and Aaron Lambert won the back and forward honors for the Abby squad. St. Andrews is now on to Victoria where they will face the Canada U-20 team. They return to Vancouver for the final leg of their trip where they play a BC U-23 squad.
Thank you to Graeme MacRury and CTC Catering for the post match meal and beverages. We wish the Scottish gents luck in the remainder of their tour.
