The next referee clinic is being offered at Fraser Middle on Friday, Feb 17 which is a Pro-D Day in a drive to get more refs certified or re-certified. You might be saying to yourself, why would I need to be certified? Can't I just referee without certification? BC School Sports has recently mandated that all rugby referees must be certified in order to officiate games and to be covered by insurance. And although some schools may not abide by this mandate, the more established programs will require it. I don't see Doug Primrose or Stephen Rowell risking a forfeit in an important match by scheduling an uncertified referee to officiate their games. If you're set on referee solely Middle School boys and girls, you're probably in luck and can skip the clinic.
I've taken the course a few years back before this mandate came out and was pleasantly surprised at my experience. Dave Pue does a good job of combining the technical aspects with video examples from games to exemplify the laws of the game. Also, a portion of the course is outside, on the field where theory turns into application; watching Lozzie run around like Mr. Bean with a whistle was not only a valuable learning tool but quite hilarious too. I've gone through a few different officiating courses and most of them are like watching paint dry; the rugby referee course is hands-on and engaging where the others just are the tedious stand and deliver lecture format followed by a test.
Once you've taken the course, you're certified for four years. At a cost of $84 for the clinic (which includes lunch but sans post-clinic beverages at Sneakers), it works out to $21/year. You'll make that back by officiating one game. You'll also be helping the ARFC; a club can never have too many certified officials within its rank and file. The club youth teams are always looking for referees on Sundays in the fall season.
