Abbotsford's U-15 team played a Lower Mainland Semi-Final on Nov 28, 2010 in Aldergrove, as fields in Vancouver and Abbotsford were closed due to weather conditions. This was an important game. If we were unable to play because of field closures, Capilanos would likely have gone through to play Bayside next week in the Lower Mainland Final - without having to play against us. Having lost twice in regular league play and twice in the Fall Elite 7s tournament, we really wanted the opportunity to avenge those losses.
From the opening whistle, we showed we were ready. Team Captain Jason Hignell delivered that notice with a determined, early try to open the scoring. Playing a disciplined, supportive game plan, we managed to play most of the half in Capilano's end of the field. By the end of the first half, we were up 22-0. Surge Francis scored two of his FOUR tries in the first half, while Noah Jensen tallied as well. Surge also kicked a conversion.
In the second half, Capilano rallied early with a series of quick moves and scored on a nice long breakaway run. However, Surge replied almost immediately with a series of great runs and his third try of the game. Noah's second try came off excellent defending, as he scooped the ball off a tackle inside the 22m for an easy looking try. Josh Thiel converted that one. Chris Mackenzie also scored off good defensive pressure, followed by a tenacious effort from Cameron Scott and the fourth of Surge's tries. Surge also managed a conversion on one of the second half tries.
The scorers get the glory but all the lads played very well. Jack Boyle and Cameron Mettrick (nice haircut Cam!) were outstanding and runners up for Men of the Match. Surge Francis and Noah Jensen were Men of the Match in Forwards and Backs, respectively.
We had one serious injury to report, Josh Thiel was sidelined after another shot to the ribs. Josh has been playing with hurt ribs and an Xray confirmed a broken rib. Speedy recovery, Josh.It was a great team effort, next week its off to Bayside to contest for the Lower Mainland U-15 Championship.
Many thanks to Brian Hunter for making the Aldergrove field available to us, it was in great shape!
