In May of 2009 it was announced by the International Olympic Committee that rugby 7s (aka: seven-a-side rugby) will be added to the Olympics in 2016. While 7s rugby has long been a part of the British Columbia Rugby landscape, in 2010 BC Rugby announced the launch of the BC Rugby 7s Series.
The "target athlete audience" for the 7s Series is competitive senior men's and women's club teams from British Columbia. British Columbia Club 7s teams who compete in 4 or more of the sanctioned tournaments will accrue points much like the IRB International 7s circuit. The provincial men's and women's champion will be crowned at the completion of the final event. Starting on June 12 the 2010 BC Rugby 7s Series will see club teams collect "7s Series Points" as they vie for the title.
The BC Rugby 7s Series competition is guided by the Operations Manual, which can be viewed by clicking here. There is also an excellent reference document prepared by the British Columbia Rugby Referees' Society regarding "refereeing seven-a-side rugby". To view, please click here.
On this site you will find a list of the endorsed BC Rugby 7s Series tournaments, as well as tournaments which are more social in nature - and an excellent way to be introduced to the seven-a-side version of the game. For those who have had the opportunity to watch 7s rugby, you know it is an electric game. Have a look for a tournament near your town/city and check it out!
