The U-19 BC Final took place in freezing conditions Dec 13, 2008 at Exhibition Park in Abbotsford. Frozen puddles surrounded the cold, barely playable pitch. It was a very windy day, which made ball handling very difficult. However, both teams adjusted after the first 10 minutes.
CW went up 12-0, with 2 tries half way through the first half, Abbotsford responded late in the first half to make the game 12-7, with a try by prop Kavin Mund; Luke Poole kicked the conversion...
The second half was back and forth, with Abbotsford dominating the ball possession, and territory. However, the CW #10 got loose again on the outside and scored a nice try to put the CW up 17-7 with 15 minutes left. Abby came right back with a try by Jake Buskell after an opportunistic quick tap by Canada U17 product Kurtis Appeldorn to make the score 17-12 with 10 minutes left. Abbotsford kept coming at CW in waves, as CW had a tough time controlling Abbotsford’s pick and drives. Abby were pressing deep inside the CW 22m looking to tie the game up, but a costly penalty gave CW the break they needed to clear the ball out of danger.
Abby Flanker Josh Esterhuizen continued his great play, and for only having played rugby for one year, he was a standout amongst some of the top players in BC. Other Abbotsford standouts included #8 Chris Chalmers, lock Jacob Buskell, and hooker Corey Sharemoto.
It was hard hitting rugby, but both sides showed excellent class and sportsmanship on the field. As one CW parent stated, “It’s unfortunate to have either side lose this game!”
For Abbotsford, the game ended a very successful 2008 BCRU Age-Grade Rugby Season, with the U17 and U16 boys winning gold, and the U15 and U19’s boys winning silver.
